Melliodora

(Hepburn Permaculture Gardens)

Tours

"Melliodora" (Hepburn Permaculture Gardens), is situated on the edge of Hepburn Springs, the spa centre in Central Victoria. It is one of the best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites in Australia. The passive solar house, mixed food gardens, orchards, dams and livestock, and creek revegetation show how permaculture design can help to restore and improve land, provide for residents needs and enjoyment in a cool inland climate.  Following purchase in 1985, the one hectare property has been developed from a blackberry covered wasteland into a model of small scale intensive permaculture, relevant to both large town blocks and small rural allotments.

GUIDED TOURS
During the 1990's thousands of people have visited Melliodora on tours lead by David Holmgren (co-originator of the permaculture concept). With the property now well established and maturing, take an excellent opportunity with a guided tour to see the principles of permaculture applied, and to learn from the wealth of practical experience of the designer owners. Due to demands for more information, the tour format has been updated to a choice of three tours.
  • Mudbrick Passive Solar House
  • Gardens tour of one hectare property
  • Spring Creek - understanding weedscapes and wild nature values, community revegetation

"Melliodora" is named after the mature Yellow Box (Eucalyptus mellidora) which grow around the fringe of our property. E. melliodora is famous for the honey made from its nectar and is indigenous to the extensive slopes of the Murray Darling Basin from western Victoria to southern Queensland. At Hepburn Springs it is at the cool summer extreme of its range and grows as a tall timber tree.
